DesignUp was pleased to sponsor a team of students in the Mechanical Engineering Technology Program at BCIT ( British Columbia Institute of Technology ). The students, Marc Daniel Eje and Robert Buchmann, were involved in designing a solution to the problem of fuel theft from fuel cache drums used in helicopter operations in remote locations of northern BC and Alberta. The design was a simple lock device to prevent access to the 2" Bung on a 55 Gallon Steel Drum, which prevents theft of the fuel. The design also makes it easy to determine if the fuel has been tampered with prior to use.
The project gave both team members good insight into the different stages of product design as well as some of the challenges. The end result was a good solution to a complicated problem, as there were several size and functional restrictions on the product.
DesignUp would like to thank both Marc and Robert and wish them the best of luck with their careers in Mechanical Design. Also we would like to thank Ken Wong of the Mechanical Technology Program. We are already looking forward to next years project!
